When people hear the term iron deficiency anemia, they often assume it’s caused by simply not getting enough iron in their diet or from blood loss. While that can be true, there’s a lesser-known reason why people struggle with anemia—your body may have plenty of iron, but it’s stuck in the wrong places and isn’t being used properly.

Why Your Body Can’t Use Iron Properly

Iron is supposed to circulate in your blood to help deliver oxygen to your cells.
